Hello Everyone
Spring seems just around the corner here in southwestern Ontario. One of the projects that I have in mind is to remove a chimney that is no longer in use. My plan is to take it down to just below roof level and them deck and shingle over it. I would like to cap it some way so that I dont have a warm air flowing out of my home. I was wondering if anyone has done this and what method they used to block the chimney and if any building code issues would be involved in a project like this. Thanks Robb

You could cap it off with sheet metal and or stuff some F/G insulation in it. I'd be more concerned at the bottom. Make sure the bottom is sealed and nothing can be connected to it if you're not around in the future.
I've seen some really stupid stuff done out there. I once got a call to install a woodburning fireplace insert in a fake (think rotating electric light inside plastic logs) fireplace that you could pick up and move around.

When it is not in use, I generally cap it at the bottom, not the top. If warm air can't get in, it can't come out.
Conversely, If you leave the base open and cap the top, the air will still rise, and you will have some small amt of condensation that could be problematic.
