Hello,
I have a situation, I have a new Car Stereo and a 12 disc CD player in my old truck. I recently bought a new truck with factory CD and Stereo, so I want to convert the old Stereo that I salvaged from my old truck for my garage with CD. If anyone has any ideas on how to accomplish this?
Thanks in advance.

Jim,
Unless you are dead poor, its not worth the trouble. Sell what you have and buy a cheap shop radio for $30 to $100.................Unless you are doing this for the shear pleasure of the learning experience.

a 12v power supply is all you need. Radio shack should have one pretty cheap.

Go to Radio Shack or someplace similar and buy a 12-volt power supply. They make them special for this application. Build a suitable case for the radio and power supply. You'll also need an antenna, of course, which can be a standard auto whip antenna attached to the box. (See RS or an auto parts place for replacement antennas.)
You of course need a set of speakers as well. Generally the built-in speakers in a car are nothing special, and the radio is "tuned" for small speakers, so you don't need anything especially fancy. For a garage I'd probably buy some of the auto speakers that come in plastic enclosures, designed for surface installation. Of course, if the existing system has a subwoofer then take that out and use it.
If you installed the radio yourself you should have the wiring diagram. You don't need to have 4 speakers, generally, but if you want you can have 4 and be able to use the "fade" to control volume between the pairs.
Hey Jim,
I have the same setup in my garage actually. There isn't anything to it. Just go down to Radio shack and get yourself a 12 volt power supply. Then hook up the stereo to the power supply, plug the power supply into the wall and you're good to go. That's all there is to it.

An even cheaper solution to the power supply is to go to Goodwill (or something similar) and buy an old computer for under $5. Open it up and there is your power supply. It will have both +5vdc and +12vdc.
Except that the computer supply is noisy (electrically) and may not work properly without a 5V load.

Or buy a plug-in radio/cassette/CD combo for $5.00..............used
or a new one at Wal-Mart for $25. (non sale price)

Thanks for the advice. I have in the past bought several radios for the shop I always seem to bring them to job sites and drop or break them. I just wanted to use what I have and thought this would be great for the garage and the kicker is the 12 disc CD I was going to run it with the radio and hook outdoor speakers to it for the backyard at the same time. I'm going for the 12 volt converter today and will work on a cabinet for the radio and CD changer.
Thanks once again for all your advice.

If you are planning to hook up speakers for the outside, make sure they are 8 or 4 ohms....It's been a while since I was into car audio but I know there is a difference between the two. Car audio I think is 4 ohm and home audio is 8 ohm. Look on your speakers to make sure. Car and home audio will sound different if hooked up backwards. Look into it unless you're not that worried about it." Looks good from my house!!"
In general, speaker impedance doesn't make much difference with modern amplifiers. The output impedance of the amp is like a quarter ohm, so matching isn't needed. (Matching to amp impedance was necessary in the olden days to get the max power out of the amp, and to avoid distortion.)

I can feel it all the way to long island how that was bothering you.....lolMy life is my passion!

Andy,
Bothered me? Nah,
But.....I've got a whole bunch of bent rusty nails I'd like to re-use from that teardown I did a few years back. What is the best way to remove the corrosion and straighten them. I own a wire brush, and have an anvil, and have a good selection of hammers.
Wait, that's you LOL
BTW, You should talk,.......... with that kick a$$ job site radio you had blastin' away last time the Bro' and I stopped by your crib.
