Many people here will know a bit about me and might even know that I don’t spread praise lightly, but I have to post a note about the Carey Template company.
A couple of weeks ago, I borrowed a Carey hinge mortise template from one of my partners in the business and set to work hanging 28 doors. The template is aluminum and ABS plastic and, of course, I nicked my partner’s template with the router.
So I got on the net trying to find out who sells parts for these things – no luck. I found the address for the manufacturer and sent them a fax asking, “Where can I buy parts?” Somebody from Carey got back to me by email very quickly asking what I wanted. I told him what I wanted and he responded immediately that the parts were in the mail.
I got them this week, but I didn’t get a bill. Why not? I have no idea.
BTW, the template is excellent. It is very lightweight, has to be treated with some delicacy, but it is very precise. Three hinge doors just slide into place. I rarely had to even tap a hinge leaf with my hammer.
While I was doing this job, milling a hinge mortise, I watched a patch of shiny metal appear under the router bit. I was thinking, “O sh!t, Now I’ve destroyed a bit and there goes another $30 or $40!” But I bashed on regardless, figuring there wasn’t much point in quitting half way and I finished that mortise. Then I dug out the bit of metal – a .22 calibre bullet or, at least, half a .22 with one side milled smooth and flat and shiny.

Nice..had the same experience with the "new" Empire level Co.....
I own an ancient Empire mag. extendable, missing the spring foot when I bought it...
Happened to see the new Empires making a marketing push into HD stores, & the foot on the new one looked identical to my olf missing one..
Called the Co., they gave me the name of the local parts rep., but then the part arrived in the mail, no charge.....
what was the jamb stock w/the 22 in it?
The stock was primed finger jointed pine, so it had been through a good deal of processing before it got to me.
We're so bloody surprised to be treated well, aren't we?
Maybe this should be posted in the business folder.
