someone called me and asked me to fix a casement window
the hinges are on the side of the window and you use a crank to open and close the window
The crank no longer works.
I asked if the handle was stripped out and she said no it was something inside the cranking mechanism
Have you ever fixed one of these?
What is involved?
I looked at an anderson window and it looks like the cover can be removed so you can work on it

Truth Hardware supplies replacement parts for many brands of casement windows:

You have to work through their dealers, though.
Thanks DanTo tell you the truth, I had never heard of them.Sorry bad jokeThanks again
I have experience repairing Anderson's. I imagine most other windows work similarly. If you have the right parts they are very easy. Make sure you lube up all of the moving parts and the rails they slide on, and the window will work like new.
we repair a lot of casements / awnings / crank windows

Thanks MikeJust out of curiosity I went to Home Depot to see if they have any window parts in stockThey don't have anything other than two sizes of crank handlesOne was $2.79 and the other was about $4.99I'm doing some work as a handyman and trying to figure out what to charge someone to drive to their home and fix one window. Thanks again.
You might check a real hardware store, if there are any left in your area.
In science it often happens that scientists say, "You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken," and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion. --Carl Sagan
well, that's tough...
1 - 2 hrs driving.....
1/2 hr investigate & match the hdw to the catalog
1/2 hr to order the hdw
driving time again
install....say 1/2 hr
total....3 1/2 to 5 1/2 hrs
$175 - $275 plus parts
best if combined with some other work for the same customer at the same tmeMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Thanks Mike, and that's a good suggestion to do some other repairs while you're there. Thanks again.
I'd first make sure the sash wasn't binding somewhere. Check the tolerances all around the sash, if the jamb is out of whack, fixing the hardware won't make it work any better. These mechanisms are very simple, and generally don't suddenly stop working unless they have been forced.
Thanks, appreciate the info
