hi all. i have an issue concerning casement windows (the ones that open outward) and techniques to weatherproof them effectively. Does anyone have any secrets that they would care to share other than regular stick on weatherstripping. thanks for your input. cruddy

Who is the manufacturer?
Aluminum sash and jamb, vinyl, or wood?
There's silicone rubber tube seals from:
Resource Conservation Technology Inc
2633 N Calvert Street
Baltimore MD 21218
USA
telephone: 410-366-1146
telefax: 410-366-1202
They have a kind with a barbed extension that fits in a routed groove for wood windows (plus a special groove router), and just simple cylinders that you glue in place for non-routable materials.

I have scratch-built several sets of casements, using crank actuators from Lowes, and typically use the "?" shaped vinyl profiles (brown or white) that fit in a saw kerf in the perimeter jamb. I get the vinyl profiles at HD. I like casements for the very reason that the sealing tightness doesn't affect operation, unlike DHs or sliders.
They seal TIGHT, and the weatherstrips are easily removable for painting. My clients have all been happy with the windows. One client insists that when I finally built their retirement house, they want "those white oak casements" throughout.

thanks, i have toying with the idea of a kerf, but have had trouble finding the "proper" stripping. thanks alot. cruddy
The only thing I really don't like on casements is the crank actuator. Give me a long hook and eye, or a rod and thumbscrew. Simpler, longer lasting....

yeah, but the actuators are only $8 at Lowes. Buy a dozen and have spars forever . . .
