From time to time we have threads on finding stuff in the walls during remodeling. Yesterday, while pulling out the drywall from a 100 yo (poorly built) house, I found a wallet with $65 in bills and some loose coins.
Ironic part is, I kinda knew the lady (the wallet contained a card giving the owners namer/address.) She died about 20 years ago, and the newest bill was 1981.
She had wrapped the wallet in a paper towel and stashed it in the framing of an old linen closet. Figured it was her ‘mad’ money, an emergency supply for some reason.
I saw it lying there and instantly thought of the BT threads.

"METHUEN, Mass. — Four men who claimed they dug up old currency worth as much as $125,000 were charged Friday with stealing the cache.
The arrests came after the men made several TV appearances and police noticed how the story seemed to change."
"Investigators said Crebase confessed. Crebase said he, Billcliff and Ingham — all roofers — found the money stuffed in tin cans at a barn they were to repair, and persuaded Kozak to go along with the story."
Here is the full story.

"The men's story of finding the money was first reported a week ago in the Eagle-Tribune of Lawrence. It was covered by numerous media across the country, including the Globe, CNN, and ABC's ''Good Morning America." Methuen police said they began to wonder after the men gave differing accounts of what happened to different media outlets."
I read about that in the local papers earlier in the week. The photo wasn't very flattering, the three dudes pictured looked like hoods, or least a rock band posing for an album cover. Guess there was more to the story after all, lol. I had wondered why the bills appeared in such good condition.

Those boys give roofers a bad rep.

I gave the wallet and contents to the pastor of the church that owns the house, he said he would try and track down any relatives of the owner. 20-25 years isn't so long ago. Cash is cash, but the wallet was a nicely tooled piece of leather, and maybe it will have some significance to a relative.
And you're right about those roofers. They just add to the general mistrust regarding contractors that some people feel.

Tells you a lot about our local paper--it ran the story this morning saying the guys had found the money while digging a hole to planrt a tree. On last night's TV news they were already saying the guys had stolen the money. I guess the editor of out paper doesn't watch TV news, suscribe to wire services, (have AOL), etc.
Editor of our paper got a letter. He opens it and manages to get white powder all over himself and his desk. Letter has on it, handwritten, "ANTHRAX". What does he do? Calls in four or five other people to show them. Then wandered down to the bathroom and washed the stuff off (appears to have been flour). Then calls police. Ended up with a Hazmat team there giving everyone showers in the street and closing off the area around the newspaper, taking people to hospital for check ups and a dose of antibiotics just in case, etc.. I know more about how to respond to something like that from watching cop shows. Like I said, though, I guess the guy doesn't watch TV.
Sounds like a candidate for the Darwin awards...

Did ya let him keep the extra $20?
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
Did ya let him keep the extra $20?>>>>>Interesting question.
Seems as though my lil'team here love me cause of what I teach them and let them know what they teach me...he "wanted" to give it back to me as a token of appreciation I felt.
So take the gift....give gifts and let those know you...well... love them and care....its what should help our world a tad better place to be in.

I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides,
I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace.
I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you
and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us.
not in a wall
we did a beautiful restoration of an old farmhouse 1850's
beautiful, made the newspapers, front page
It had had many additins and remodels since it was built, but the kitchen hadnt been touched since it had been built at least in structure. the last structural legal anyway, was in 1890
the ceiling ws t&g fir, clear, painted and lowered. the owner wnated all the ceilings raised back up
we started pulling the ceiling out
roll, roll, roll.
we heard this noise and out rolled a lead pipe about a foot long , capped on both sides. it rattled, something was inside
we opened it up, the owner standing there
out came a ring with a cast in skull with black rocks for eyes, my wife said were probabally garnets or obsidian
the homeower took it
were all still alive , no cnacer or buggies
she is now pushing 90
Ill never forget that one
however
i am still stuggling and drive a 14 year old pick up, my back hurts, my elbow aches, and my gut is bigger
maybe I was cursed !!!!!!!! thats it..... honest babe its not my fault, its that ring, it has nothing to do with 14 hour days or budwiser
by the way, we took all the t&g ceiling, ran it through the planer, used it to build the cabinets, and now her "new" kitchen has "100" year old cabinets (well at least most of the visible wood)
