We have Cast Iron sewer pipe under our CONCRETE basement floor. Plumber says it needs to be replaced.
Room has to be torn up anyway due to Mold/Asbestos abatement, so it seems to make sense to replace pipe now.
Pipe is 55 years old and is supposedly rusting from inside out.
QUESTION: Better to replace with PEX, new CI or Pipe liner?? Obviously, the liner method seems less invasive, but
really which way is the best way to go? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
We already replaced pipe from the house to the
street due to roots growing and the yard/asphalt drive was greatly impacted……pipe under the concrete floor is ‘all’ that is left to replace. HELP!

PVC is what is generally used. Unless your code calls for it I wouldn't use cast iron if I could help it. It probably is rusting out. We've taken out cast iron sewer pipe that had a rusted out slot in the bottom over an inch wide.
X2 on the PVC. I had a cast iron pipe rusted out so bad it crushed when I stepped on it.
The only down side I have ever heard about PVC is noise and that would not be an issue if it is buried under the floor.
Thank you for your response.! We were wondering if you had ever heard of anyone using the pipe liner system in a home....
and/or if you are familiar with Permaliner?
I suppose it depends on whether the resulting liner still meets the code for size.
This sounds attractive if replacing the pipe is unbelievably tough to do but new pipe is always a better deal.
Either This Old House or Hometime did a pretty good show on the pipe liner scheme a year or 18 months back -- you may find it online somewhere. And the same scheme (on a much larger scale) is used a lot for municiple sewers -- they did it on the sanitary running down our street about 5 years ago.
The scheme looks pretty good for where the alternative really sucks, but likely is not as durable as full replacement (and probably not cheap). So given that, in your case, tearing up the floor is not a deal-breaker, full replacement is probably the better option. But you might want to price the liner, just for grins.
I think this is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UxrJRZ0_kA
Thank you for your response. Know anything about the Permaliner lining sytem?
Again, Thank you.
