Caulking Behind New Window Nailing Fins
Owner-Builder Wannabe here new to forum…..
Any comment on the necessity/merit of caulking behind nailing fins in new window installation? Heard pros about sealing advantages, cons about caulk breakdown over time and uneven seating of window in framing.
Thx

Welcome, Here's what I do
Buy Bithuthane in 6" rolls, do bottom first extend past window 6-8" each side
run up sides, lap bottom extend 6-8" past top
install top, lap sides
Wala----- weather tight, no caulk bumps to deal with when trimming windows, no air gaps
So in answer to you your question I don't caulk, seal inside with low expansion foam
Do what the manufacturers installation instructions say.

I recall using acoustic sealant at someone's insistence - messy. but there are better ways (as posted).
BTW - welcome. You'll find a lot of info here (and not a little BS). Keep asking questions - it keeps us all on our toes! If you haven't done so, fill out your profile - rightclick on your name and a Q and A comes up.
All the best...
To those who know - this may be obvious. To those who don't - I hope I've helped.
