I just got finished installing pre-primed hardiplank and harditrim on my house but won’t won’t be able to paint it for a couple of months. But I will caulk the butt joints and gaps around the trim to keep the rain from getting behind the siding. Is it ok to use a good latex caulk like DAP 230 on joints without priming the joints, even though alot of the joints are cut edges rather than the factory finished primed edge ?
A couple of things that found while installing siding alone was that the Labor Saver siding hanging tool worked really well. It has a rotating knob that allows the height to be adjusted in 1/16th increments. Also, nailzone.com has hot dipped galvanized roofing nails and stainless steel finishing nails at a good price, and they worked well in my nail guns with no jamming. I think they are made in Korea, the packaging is not fancy, but the price is right. Also, I bought a roofing gun to blind nail the siding. I bought the Dewalt because its was a hundred dollars cheaper than any other nailer ($149.00 from Amazon). It absolutely will not sink a nail through hardiplank with 90 psi air pressure, and I tried 1 1/4″ and 1 3/4″ smooth shank hot dipped roofing nails. It will penetrate the hardiplank, and go half way into the sheathing, but you have to hand nail it the rest of the way.

I wouldn't worry about priming cut ends of cement board siding before caulking.
I've never much used the DAP 230 caulk he asked about. I found this on the web: http://www.dap.com/product_details.aspx?BrandID=14&SubcatID=3
My question is how can it be siliconized latex and be called elastomeric??? Is elastomeric more of a property than a formula? I thought elastomeric was like polyurethane or similar???
elastomeric seems to be between latex and poly...

I did a large commercial building with a product similar to Hardie 4 x 8 panels, but not Hardie. Product was manufactured in Spain.
I spoke to the manufacturers rep about the caulk to use and was told to use only a caulk that contains rubber.
Can be butyl , or other rubbers but had to be rubber. I searched and found a dozen caulks that fit what he wanted to see used.
One of them, "Big Stretch " is what we settled on.
Hey Dan that's the SoloSider you were using (allows adjustments up and down in 1/16 inch increments in real time) not the Laborsaver.
Thanks [email protected]
Sorry about that mistake. Yes it is the SoloSider that I used. It works great, and is very durable. I installed 2200 sq ft of siding and didn't want to depend on overlap dimension only since the hardiplank width was not exact. So I made marks on corner boards and used the adjustment in the tool to line up the top of the siding with the marks.
Hi Dan
, Thanks for the correction - glad you liked the tool !
