What do you want your deck to look like? Gray and weathered or "like new?" Waiting over the winter will change the appearance of the deck, but shouldn't allow any significant deterioration.
What type of cedar is the deck made from? Western red?
Generally speaking, a good finish will extend the life of a deck primarily by easing UV damage from the sun.
I use this product on my cedar porches:

But there are other quality products too (that one happens to be both effective and relatively nontoxic).
i would like it to look like new, and its red cedar... so i think i should stain in right away, before the winter. thanks for the response.
