My wife and I purchased a house built in 1925 that has cedar shingle siding. The bad thing is the previous owner put aluminum siding over it in the 1970’s. I am planning on removing the aluminum siding to expose the cedar. Has anyone done this before and what kind of problems did you encounter? Any good advice?
Thanks,
Brad

Brad,
Just remember that the cedar may have been covered because it was so bad off that it was more cost effective to cover than to repair.
Don't get me wrong, it it were my place, I'd be pulling the aluminum off while the moving truck was being unloaded. Just don't expect things to be in good shape underneath. You may have looked at one of the better sections. Be prepared to have to do a decent amount of restoration work on the cedar.
*Brad,Messi speaks the truth, and then some. 75 year old cedar shakes smothered under aluminum siding for 25 years in all liklyhood won't leave you with much to work with when it's uncovered. Please don't get your hopes up. I've done oodles of siding tearoffs and what's underneath isn't pretty. There will literally be thousands of nail holes from foil or foam, lath, channels, and the siding itself. Not just little nail holes either, roofing nail holes. The paint is probably falling off the shingles at this point. They will need to be stripped down to bare wood. There will be a lot of split shingles, broken shingles, and missing shingles. There will be tons of preparation and repairing to do if you think you want to save the cedar.Sorry for all the pessimism, but I've seen it hundreds of times. Good luck with what you decide to do.Red dog
