There really isnt any wood shingle for a roof that is inexpensive. You either have the perfections or shakes both of which is a tremendously labor intensive yet the end result is by far well worth it and IMO adds a lot of value to the house.
To cut some of the labor use "Cedarbreather" under the roofing rather than skip sheathing. Its costly but nothing to install.
Look into the Cedarbureu website for all the details! Thats pretty much the most helpful. I think its http://WWW.CEDARBUREU.COM . Of I', ,mistaken I'm sure someone here will give you the right site or simply just google it.

I believe it is possible to get cypress shingles down thataway. They are better for your hot humid climate - not rotting out as quickly.
