I have a job that the home owner asked me to install cedar siding. The house is sided with aluminum. The soffets and facia are also capped. I have done cedar siding on new homes before. My question is what would you do with the already capped soffit and facia? Also the old siding is wood clap board. Would I be able to go over that, or would it be better to install that fan fold insulation first? I planned on installing corner boards and cedar trim boards around the windows. The owner is really easy going and any suggestion I made would be acceptable to him.
What would be the best way to go?
Thanks, Tweak

tweak ...you twit..
what is cedar siding? shingles ? clapboards ?
the soffit & fascia are wrapped with alum.
depends... whole hog... strip it to sheathing, install new trim, new fascia, soffit... flashings..
if you're talking about removing the alum.siding.. and overlaying the old clapboard. (with shingles ? )
the outer plane of the new siding will be 1.5 inches or more from the surface of teh sheathing... your trim should be (proud) of that and you have to get flashings in...
think you gotta strip to sheathing... hell, make a career out of it.. redo all the exterior....
*O.K. The owner wants cedar lap siding. I can't strip it down to the sheathing because the old wood clap board siding is the sheathing. So, can I just apply the new lap siding over the old 4" clap board or do I need to do something else.Tweak
*well... that'splains everything..take off the alum.siding... apply /extend the trim..pay attention to flashing details, you're gonna treat the old clapboard just as if it were NOTHING more than sheathing... is lap siding the same as clapboards ?if the exposure will be 4 inch can you drop the bottom course 1.5 inch and nest all the new claps into the old claps ? just as if you were doing an asphalt shingle overlay..use 15# felt (tar paper) over the old ....and ice &water membrane and metal flashings...
