Does anyone know of any companies that make prefab Ceiling Domes other then Fypon?
They make up to 48″ diameter at 9-1/2″ in height. That’s to small. We’re looking for something up to 5′ diameter with a height up to 15″.
If there’s nothing out there I can just frame it. This is on a house I just framed this summer and I went down there to box around duct work and all the steel.
The steel being boxed really kills the kitchen and family room, so I’m framing a Tray ceiling in between the two pieces of steel which is about 14′ and from the second piece of steel to the front wall which faces the ocean with 4 sliding glass door is 68″. In that section I suggest either a Barrel Ceiling, a Dome Ceiling or a Tray Ceiling.
Since there’s 4 sliding doors I jokingly said we can put 3 Domes centerd in between the posts of each door and both of the Builders said they want to do that.
I was standing there yesterday leaning on the ladder and looking at how high the waves were on the ocean and that’s what gave me the Barrel effect and I turned and looked at my friend who is the builder and said to him, “OOOOOHHH, DO HAVE HAVE AN IDEA NICKY…” He said, Yeh, I’ll bet it goes Round.”
We both started laughing because he said he was watching me looking around and he knew that the wheels were turning in my Crazy head and he thought the same thing.
So anyway, does anyone know of any good Ceiling Domes?

I've used and have plans to on a project i'm doing now to use old sat. dishes... I've used both the fiberglass (about 9' with an aprox 12" dish) and i've used the wire ones and plasered them... the fiberglass ones i sandblasted the gel coat so it'd get a tooth to it then i shot it with a fine stuco ... the fake stuff with a hopper gun... i've never paid for one usually free if you'll haul it off... just get'n harder to find
i'm sure there are better ways but this one is cheap... last one i did went into a dressing area between the master bedroom & bath... turned out really well

That's my vote for the most innovative use of garbage.

Emptiness is not really empty, emptiness is full of everything.
The "everything", just isn't manifest

Thanks Andy, I'll give it a shot.
The builder found a site last night and showed me some pictures and there nice. They come in all different sizes. They have a 5' Radius with a 13" height and you can by a crown molding that fits perfectly inside for lighting.
I forgot the pictures at the job today but it's from some Company in Goergia. They have them in stock also.
In the picture they have the Dome painted with a blue sky and a seagull in it. It's funny because I was telling the builders yesterday that they could do that because my wife had my sons ceiling painted like that when he was born. I told the girl who was painting the ceiling to paint an Angel with my face, so she and my wife threw me out of the room...... ;-)

Joe, can you share the site with us? Always looking for new things.
Joe,
Would that face of yours on the angel be missing an eyebrow :-)
Do I have to come out there and teach you and Joe F. to treat each other with some respect? Don't make me come out there?
If you do frame those ceilings, take a bazillion pics. I want to see it in progress.
Hey, while we had a few minutes of free time on the job last week, I cut some scrap OSB into 4 arches and 2 ellipses and nailed them together to make a groin vault. I'm thinking I'll get to do one this winter.

I seem to recall seeing a dome on Joe Fuscos site that he built from scratch. Perhaps he may have investigated pre fabbed in the process? May be worth asking him about it.

Mark,
He did build one. I talked to him last night on the way home from work about what I was thinking of doing but I didn't ask him where to get a prefab. Besides he doesn't know what he's doing anyway, he just cut a medicine ball in half and nailed it up.. ;-)
I'd love to Frame all three of them. I would still have to frame all the openings anyway. The website that the builder found had nice domes with the crown molding that fits right in. That's a nice feature. Thanks Mark.
