at the house we are finishing up , the ceiling fans installed by electricians are making a loud hum. they are controled by wall mounted speed controlers, like a dimmer switch. we called the electrician and he said any fan on a speed control is going to make noise. is this true? we bypassed the switch and it did take the noise away.

All is not lost, call an electrical supplier and they should be able to furnish you with the proper speed control that won't hum. That electrician of yours is leaving an awful lot to chance.

I understand it could be dangerous? Get to the supply house and get the proper dimmer switch for fans and the noise will be gone. home fixer, you build it, they break it, we fix it...

There are two different types of fan speed controllers
Electronic which typically give you full variability with speed and Switched capacitor which typically only have 3 speeds.
I've found that the switched capacitor controllers make for quieter fans.
Hunter offers both types
Some fans draw more current (amps) than others, make sure that
the controller can handle the current requirements of the fan.
Also check with the fan manufacturer to see if a specific controller can be used with their fan

Guess the question on *MY* mind is:
How well can it hum ??? Can it carry a tune ?
Here's two more for ya Boss
What kind of "juice" do the fans need (from Pete's thread)
And from my post, how do you "draw a current", do you use a pencil ?
p.s Glad to se ya made it here, I'm begining to think we need to do a head count to see who has'nt made it to the the new site yet.
