We’ve got 10′ high ceiling in our kitchen, with the dining area floor is 12’x24′. The U-shaped kitchen area is about 12’x12′. We have a ceiling fan over the dining table and I’ve got a ceiling fan (52″) for over the island, in the middle of the kitchen area. But now I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to have a fan there… not a good idea when using the stovetop. Any opinions?

What is it that you hope to achieve with a ceiling fan there?
Circulate the air, moving the warm air down in winter, cooling in summer. We use the one over the dining table all the time, wondering how much it will interfere with cooking if placed in kitchen.
If your stove is gas, you can't operate the fan while the stove is on. Gas burners are very sensitive to drafts. The fan will also confound the effectiveness of your stove exhaust.
Just a reminder that if you have one over a food area (eating or preparation) - you need to really clean it a lot. Even when constantly moving they get and redistribute scuz.
A,
AWE, a little dirt never hurt anyone. If you get something gritty - just pretend you're camping.

Hee, hee. I love to camp, but that's CLEAN dirt.
I installed a ceiling fan in a kitchen (12' x 12') with 8' high ceiling and a gas stove within reaching distance over 8 years ago. The fan is blowing down on low speed and has not been turned off yet with no noticible impact on the stove's performance. The exhuast hood over the stove has a variable speed fan and performs without a problem as well. I'm the designated cook and need the air moving to make cook time pleasant.
