Have any of you out there installed a decorative plastic / tin style ceiling directly to an existing drywall ceiling? How did it go ? any tips ? Would appreciate any and all info and help. Thanks

I did one tin ceiling a long time ago. the HO had already "sheathed" the ceiling in 1/2 ply....
It was a pita job....the hardest detail was the crown..you almost have to build the room to the dimension of the pans to get it to look right, since they "want" to interlock at the factory edge with the crown pieces to look the best....and the miters were a bear....
it looked ok when done...
I think the stuff was invented to save on the labor costs back when a ceiling was stick lathe & 3-coat plaster, so although now it's considered $$$custom, back when it was the cheap way to go...the vinyl siding of it's day....
