The 40 yr old+ paint on my lathe & plaster ceilings in the bath, hall, and kitchen are peeling, flaking, and cracking over their entire surfaces. I’ve been advised to use a heat gun, stripper, remove and replace with new drywall, and patch and repaint. I would like to strip, prime, and repaint without having to use a textured coating as a hide-all. Any tips from experience would be appreciated. Thank you.

I had a similar question after I removed some popcorn ceiling. I was advised that just putting up some 1/4" drywall over the whole thing would save time and effort. Don't know about your situation, but it's worth considering. Make sure your paint isn't peeling due to a roof leak or something.
