I believe the impermeable surface directly under the shakes will result in a lot of moisture at times against the back of the shakes resulting in cupping and - if there is a finish - failure of the finish. I believe felt and the old sawn lumber sheathings contributed to theh length of the siding and finish by tempering the moisture flucuations in the siding. Why not at least put the felt over the foam?
*Greg... think about using the matted fiberous shake underlayment on top of sheathing to allow for air space drying, etc
