I finished the article on pre-finished siding in the september issue:number 197. I have done many homes in pre-finished Cement board before but there was a couple of things i wanted some clarification on. On pg. 44 there are two cross sections of wall. The article says you should fir out all exterior walls for ventalation 1″1/2. Woulnt there be an issue with window and door instulation? Otherwise your 1x trim around the doors and windows would stick out past the window unless you pull the window out, then the nailing would be problematic and you would need extension jams. Also this seems like ths would add a significant cost to your avarage home. Then in cross section two, they discuss rain screen. This also seems expensive. I can see if a home owner requests it and is wlling to pay for it. But this dosent seem cost efective for your avarage costructon company.

OK, at the risk of sounding totally stupid, and really showing my "newbie-ness", what does "bump" mean?No Coffee No Workee!
A bump is a saying we use to make a thread appear in the recent discussions so others who may know an answer to that question. I am the unofficial official thread bumper here and bump a thread when it gets no responses to the original question after a day or two

And a great job you are doing !
thanks

Furring out walls to create a rainscreen is a good response to the problems houses face in very wet climates. Like any building technique designed for a specific region, rainscreen doesn't make economic or practical sense where there is no moisture problem to address.
I notice that lots of advice designed to address specific building issues, like high wind conditions on the gulf coast or shear walls for high seismic areas, ends up being presented as something that should be incorporated into all houses. Incorporating rainscreen does bring up a whole new set of wall detailing problems to deal with flashing and ventilation. Unless you are building up here in the PNW where you can just about watch things rot, I wouldn't worry about it.
your point is well taken. thanks, but lets say you are going to fur out 1"1/2 all the way around a 4 or 5000 sq. ft. home with 20-25 windows 3 slides and 4 exterior doors which is typical of what i do. expalin the door and window process if you put the 1x behind the doors and windows dosent it make the nailing and sealing I.E. silicone and flashing the doors and window problmatic and second if you wrap those doors and windows in a 1x and have the siding butt up to the 1x3 or 4 wouldnt firring doors and windows out make your trim stick out past the window? So i wold assume you would pull the window forard to acomadate the furring strips and then you would add extension jams. This was the part of te artice they did not complete th tought. maybe you can explain the proeess to me.
Also on a side note which i didnt note in my first post. i have done about 50 homes in pre finished cement board, but becasue of caulking, nail holes to be filled, scratches and dirt , and added trim that didnt get pre finished it seems like i always have to repaint it anyway. so i think a factory prime, is a good start But field painting still works out better for me. what do you think?
I can't imagine why anyone would fur out 1 1/2". All the rainscreen done here uses 1/2" or 3/4". Even with that some window manufacturers are making models with extended profiles outside the flange to make up the difference. New rainscreen is a lot easier than reno. Applying 1x on an existing house would indeed cause all the problems you list, and also in most jurisdictions would be classed a concealed space and require firestops.
yup, thats what i thought. read in article in FHB NO. 197 they call out 1 1/2 thats why i asked the question
I've recycle my old issues pretty quickly. Maybe the 1 1/2" was a mistake? As to paint or pre-finished, I don't do enough Hardi to answer from experience.
For some reason ( I like to blame the rain) pretty much everything I touch is filthy by the time it is installed, so it needs washing and finishing again anyway.
buddy, slow down. I can't understand a word you type if I can't read it.
