Has anyone paced hinges on both sides of a French door that is generally the fixed door in a pair of center hung French doors? Our dining room opens out to our new family room addition. We want to add a center hung door to separate these two areas when our teenager has friends over. Most times the “active” door will be open. But we also want to have the ability to open this 5 foot area up completely when the ocassional need arises.
We don’t have enough wall to install pocket doors, otherwise that would have been our solution. We have a great view and want to capitalize on it.

I've seen a set up like this, I think it was custom built because I've never seen such a thing in a catalog.
The stationary door did not hold the weight of the active door. There was a mullion between the two doors that locked into the floor and head jamb. But, you could unlock this piece and swing it away with the two doors attached to it. I don't remember where I saw it or how the thing locked into the top and bottom. Seems like it had those levers set into mortises like you see on commercial doors but I could be wrong.
Why not just a pair of regular old french doors that open in the middle?
*I have done this several times in different configurations. The doors can either hinge the same direction and "fold" open, or be installed in a bi-fold type pattern. I always use off the shelf doors, in custom jambs. Depending on the opening size you can do almost anything you want. I have done 8-0 openings with 4 2-0 doors opening both ways from the middle, and with 3 2-8 doors opening both ways from 1/3. I have never used dual glazed doors so I'm not sure about the extra weight, but I have never had a problem with single glazed doors.
