Ceramic over 12″ vinyl tiles on slab?
House built on slab. Laundry room has 12″ vinyl (or similar tile) over the concrete slab. Customer wants ceramic. Existing tiles seem to be in good shape, no lifting or tears.
Can I install ceramic right over the existing or does it have to come up? Should I use Hardibacker, Ditra, or neither, or both?
If I use Hardi, do I have to screw it to the slab? Or will thinset be enough to hold it? Don’t really want to drill that many holes for tapcons to fasten backerboard.
I did a search, but didn’t find exactly the conditions. Checked the tile council page, and it was pretty general.
Thanks in advance.

Pull up the vinyl.
If the slab is in good condition (smooth/flat enough for vinyl installation) you should be able to install the ceramic directly to it....no backer board required.
Oh how they pound, raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale, telling their tale,
Gaily they ring while people sing
songs of good cheer, Christmas is here....
