This week I will be building my first ceramic tile mudbed. It’s going in a shower floor over a PVC membrane and drain already installed by the plumber. Should I use regular brick setting type mortar? (N or S type?) I’ve read that the mix should be somewhat dry and crumbly to facilitate troweling it on a slope towards the drain. I’ve heard that a little handfull of spacers thrown in around the drain base can help weep hole function. Any advice would be helpfull. Thanks!

Don, head for Taunton Press bookstore somewhere on the site and get Mike Byrnes book "Setting Tile".......think there is a video too. Sounds like just what you need. Joe H

*A contractor building a friend's house has laid the sheetrock horizontally. No sweat, longer sheets, fewer seams. He has ,however, screwed the rock approximately 26" apart on the vertical studs. I feel as tho' we're not getting screws, but getting screwed. Your comments please.
*I use 1 part Portland,3 parts sand,1/3 part hydrated lime - mixed fairly stiff - for shower pans and walls.
*I've heard there will be less shrinkage and subsequent cracking if you go leaner like 1:4
*Why do you use lime in your floor mud? Or do you float the floor at the same time as the walls?
*Don, Check this out. It should answer most of your questions and it includes a recipe for deck mud.
*You may also want to check issue#120 (January '99). Beginning on page#120 there's good information about installing and tiling over a mortar bed. Good Luck.
*I buy a product called Easy Float. Made in Plant City, FL. Comes is 80 lb. bags. Add water and away you go. Your local tile distributor will have similar products available under whatever label they happen to carry.
*Check out the current issue of FHB
*Hi Don,If it's not too late. See the currents issue of Fine Homebuilding maazine. There is a whole article on installing a shower pan. Very good. Hope this helps. Larry
*I just got the new issue (Sept 2001) of Fine Home building for the timely article on Installing a Leak proof Shower Pan. We (husband and I) are installing a shower pan. Having done construction work my husband has had limited experience with shower pans..I have had none, but have read a lot. My question on the article is about applying a layer of latex-modified thin set to the sub floor. How is this latex-modified thin set applied? In the example photo is what Tom is shown trowling(darker stuff) thinset? My husband says yes. I know that this is a stupid question, but it won't be my first. Thanks
