This may have been covered before, but can I install ceramic tile over ceramic tile and if so, how? Pros and cons? I am replacing my bathtub and had to demo some tile to do so. The replacements don’t quite match, so I’m considering retiling the whole bathroom. I would like to avoid all the demolition if possible. Thanks in advance.

Yes, ceramic tile can be installed over existing ceramic tile. There are a few considerations involved. First, the existing setting bed should be sound and free of cracks. The tiles should all be adhered well and the grout should be in good shape.
Before setting the new tile, you will need to roughen up the old tiles to help the thinset adhere. I use carbide grit sandpaper or a masonry rubbing stone. Clean the tiles with a damp sponge and set the new ones with a premium latex-modified thinset. When laying out the new tiles make sure that the new grout lines aren't directly over existing ones.
In terms of pro/cons, the biggest issues are the height difference that the new tile creates, and that ultimately the new installation is only as sound as the existing one. This is particularly an issue in wet areas; however you can use the opportunity to add an additional waterproofing layer, such as a trowel-on membrane, before tiling. If you do this, make sure the membrane is compatible with this type of installation.

Thanks for the reply. I've already demo'd it. The thickness was going to be an issue and my wife wanted new fixtures.
95% of the time "the Wife" and new fixtures usually gets the sledge swinging.
It will be a much better job, lasting longer and looking as it should rather than a reno quicky job. Good luck and let's see the pics during and after.
Agreed!!
