I just got an estimate for $6.00 a SF installing 4×4 ceramic tile in a bathroom. Nothing fancy just tile on greenboard. This is in the NY NY area. Is this price a little high?

I'm in the same are.
I pretty much won't go out for less than $10.per.
I hope you didn't use greenboard in a shower or tub area.
For 6 bucks a foot, I'd actually be leary of getting a quality job.
But maybe he's superfast, I dunno.

Westchester Cty. NY....$6 a square foot is right on the money for the tile you`ve described.

Here in N.C. it is $3 to $4 and $10 for concrete backerboard.
I charge that or more for Pittsburgh ... based on the average price I bid ...
I don't bid by the sq ft ...
so for NY ... actually sounds like it's be low.
should be more expensive there, right?
btw ... most HD's and Lowes list the "basic install sq ft price" ... check out what the low-ball price for your area is.

I'm with Jeff it sound's low for what I would expect in NY, we pay a min. of 8 sqft and I'm in Kansas, Just west of KC
Are those prices including the cost of the tile? Usually when I do tile I charge between $6 & 8 /sqft and that gets you hardibacker, adhesive, and me. The only time its different is if its a stock (4x4) tile or if they specify the tile.
That bottom of the barrel number includes the tile, standard Group 1 AO, that does not include bullnose etc. just field tile.
Most of our tile job's average out around 12 bucks for middle of the road tile, but it's hard to give a sqft number because of trim tiles etc that are a lot more expensive then field tile.
Thats why I usually dont include the tile in the estimate. Edge tiles and accents are expensive. Its not worth my time guessing what a client will like. I will go shopping with them but I wont guess on their taste (i've had people ask me to do just that).
Unless it's a real small job, we sub out tile work, for our estimates I use anywhere from 12-15 sqft depending on the house and project for floor tile installed including backerboard grout, seal etc. For a kitchen backsplash I use 20 sqft. But those are numbers local to Kansas.... The numbers for NYNY seemed low.
For the record......the $6/sq. ft. NY price I was speaking of, was for labor only.
No tile.....no backer....no thinset.....nadda. Labor only for a basic 4 x 4 ceramic install.
I personally don`t quote square foot prices......too easy to get burned. I typically quote the job itself. IIRC...the last time I figured what the sq./ft. price would have worked out to on a simple install, I was in the $10/sq. ft. range for labor.

$3 to $4 a sq. ft. labor only. Big tile, small tile, straight or diamond pattern.
Where are you located at? At that price including the return trip for grout I dont know if I could make it.
North Carolina
The Home Depot somewhat near here had a sign up in the store advertising tile setting for $8 per square foot, including backer board. I charge $12-15, especially for small jobs, which have a lot of time tied up in mobilizing and making the necessary trips to the job.
How many bids did you get for this job? That would be the best way to asertain whether or not this is a high or low price. I am always a bit leary of the lowest bidder. Check his referances.
That sounds pretty cheap, unless it is alot of square feet on a simple surface, i.e, not many jogs, etc.
I love this site, but it's been noted many times in the past that it's not appropriate to ask about the cost of anything since this is a nationwide site. The California guy isn't going to represent the Wisconsin guy.
I understand pricing is taken w/ a grain of salt. I was simply asking if you guys felt my prices are within the median. I believe I mentioned i'm in the metro detroit area and I realize that my prices wont match those found in other areas.
Why is it not appropriate to talk about costs? Information is not bad. All one has to do anyway is go to http://www.411.com look up a business in any state, call them and ask them their fee. Information cannot and should not be suppressed.
Just for some interesting perspective, here is an early thread on the same topic.http://forums.taunton.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=tp-breaktime&msg=17374.1Prices seem to be quite a bit higher seven years later.Rich BeckmanAnother day, another tool.
