Is there a crack isolation membrane that can be placed over a crack or joint in a concrete slabs to avoid the transferrance of the crack through the tile if/when movement occurs?

Use Ditra

I was hoping to find an uncoupling membrane to use that could be used over the joints without doing the entire floor and also raise the height. I'm assuming this will add 1/4" or so.John

There is a membrane about .06 thick or so. I used it in my home. Forget the name. I still ended up with one crack about 3 feet of so out of a few hundred feet. I'm OK with it.
That is kind of what I was thinking. If you can remember the name, I would appreciate it so I can do some research. I hate doing a job more than once.John

Ditto Ditra.

Schlutre-Ditra is probably your best bet. There are other products which do the same. Take a slow stroll down the tile aisle at your local big box.

Many moons ago I used a product NOBLE SEAL, I believe it was called. It was a CPVC membrane, relatively thick, which was advertised to do what you are asking for. Can't really comment on the efficacy, however, as we sold the house 2 years after I put it down.
Perhaps someone else will chime in with more current info. & a justified testimonial.
PS: I'm not even sure if the company still exists!

Crack Isolation Sheet
Protects thin-set tile from cracking by relieving the stress caused by horizontal movement in the substrate. Also, helps to preserve tile patterns by bridging control joints
Still around......

What's the tile guru site? Johns Bridge or something like that. There's a ton of info there.
My pleasure.

Yes. Any good pvc or Ditra or some paint ons will prevent those cracks from migrating up. If, however, they are still growing, this may be problematic.
Ditra works well for that. If the crack has much vertical movement all bets are off. You can try Noble if you can't afford the extra height of the Ditra (but Ditra's not that much height).

Ditra gets all thumbs up but if one wants you can try Redgard. http://www.custombuildingproducts.com/ProductCatalog/SurfacePrep/WaterproofingAntiFractureMembranes/RedGard.aspx
I've had great results with this stuff for a number of different applications....but stilll...Ditra is at the top of the list. Even Home Depot carries it by me...as well as the Redgard
edit: just happened to still have this on my mouse from another thread I added it to. This was the last place I used the Redgard....this past summer for a customer.
