Tips/suggestions on supporting 3×3 ceramic tiles overhead while thinset dries. Question applies to grout techniques as well. Client wants tiles to run overhead out of shower into a portion of the bathroom. Thanks.
BTW, I hope others got the chance to notice that Fine Woodworking’s 25th Anniversary issue was one of the finest magazines I have ever seen produced. It didn’t seem fair that it came with the subscription. After reading it cover to cover, I felt as if I had read a book, and a damn good one at that!

Turn the room upside down....do your work then return to original position.
Or, try a different glue. Most of the new type mastics have enough grab to not have to worry about the gravity affecting the work. Grouting is just perseverance..stiffen the mix up alittle and be prepared to wear some of it
*David:Dont use mastic in the bathroom. It works with thinset..just use a stiffer mix, it will just feel sticky when you get it right. Spread and comb like normal and set your tile. If they fall off see Mark, I like his method best!Dave
*Mark you are a genius! If I had only known, then I could have built the room upside down in the first place, but tacked everything together so that I could then....Seriously, thanks for the help. Using a stiffer mix is certainly my first step. I was just wondering if anybody had used some unusual techniques for setting tile on a ceiling.DB
*DavidI have put lots of tile on ceilings, with both mastic and thinset. A good quality latex modified thinset will have as much or more grab than mastic. One time I did have a tile fall off a ceiling as I was setting, but that was due to a bad batch of material. If the ceiling has a slope to it, then you will need to use tape or other methods to stop the sliding downhill effect. If you doubt the grab of the thinset, set a tile with 100% coverage and try to pry it off with your finger tips. You'll see that the thinset/latex has incredible suction, especially over cememt board or mortar.I usually put the tile on a ceiling on the diagonal just to jazz things up a bit.Rob Z
