…do you caulk butt joints? The paint company (Wiess) doesn’t insist on it, and I can’t find anything in Hardi’s instructions that insists. Remember, there won’t be a third coat brushed on to cover the caulk. I’ve been told that dust collects on the caulking more than the paint so you get white streaks at each joint.
Thanks,
Scott.

Huh? The paint goes on in a factory, two coats. Then it arrives at a jobsite and gets nailed. No third coat needed for 25 year (questionable) warranty. I can handle the wimpy warranty but I haven't had any clear advice on whether to caulk.
I'm tempted not to, dust sticking is one reason, thermal expansion/contraction is another. One bit of advice was to skip the caulk and just put an extra layer of felt/flashing behind the joint.

experience says you'll paint anyways...
there'll scratches and chips and gouges in the paint no matter how careful you are when yur done....
just touching up will look terrible...

Gawd. Really!!?
Not that I doubt your advice, but it seems a shame to pay big bucks for a two coat factory finish only to have to brush the whole damn thing a third time. Do people use these factory finishes much in your area?

Nope....
word gets out quick....
there was somebody here (poster) that said they that did well on their prepainted instalation...
Mike Smith IIRC but don't quote me on that..
you'll also see the score marks left by the tools at the butts and rips...
so far from experience and observation I won't use it again...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... did you purchase already...

I've installed prepainted and prestained on several homes with good results.
My local paint store mixes a matching touch up paint/stain (which we always dab on the cut ends and edges), and can also tint caulking to match. (I use Vulkem urethane caulk, BTW).
As far as scrapes and gouges, I've never had a problem with that. The material comes packaged well and the factory finishes are very durable. (In the beginning, we rubbed a couple scrap pieces together face to face with a bit of grit thrown in to test the finish and it left no mars).
I do use Certainteed F/C by choice and have no experience with the prepainted/stained Hardie.
Be sure to flash behind your butt joints.
Thanks.

Are you the one that made some interesting flashing pieces specially for butt joints? If so could you post a pic or point me to the thread?
(BTW, have you considered changing your name to Buttman? LOL...)
