Hello,
My husband has almost every issue of FHB but I’ve found a question he can’t answer. We have an old 2×2 tile backsplash that extends to the upper cabinets in our kitchen. It is off white tile with almost black grout and looks like chain link fence if you squint. Is there a way to lighten the grout color without replacing it completely?

1. How good are you with an artist's brush?
2. Would you mind if the grout was done in a semigloss?
Seriously, I don't kinow of a way to lighten the grout other than painting it, or replacing it.
Unless you're the lead dog, the view just never changes.
You could try oxalic acid on it, but I wouldn't be real hopeful.
I once did a clients floor grout with a product that was designed specifically for this. It was a paint of some sort.
It wasn't fun, looked ok after it was done, but I can not offer any performance evaluations.

Backsplashes are usually pretty small. maybe re-do is in order.

They did it on the tv show Designer Finals. Maybe their website has info.
You can do it but it's real tedious. You can get grout colorant at HD or a tile shop-it's basically paint. I put it down ony my whole floor a couple of years ago and it holds up very well. But the grout lines are 1/4 wide, so it's easier to do than it would be on thin lines which I am guessing the backsplash has. It might be a good idea to just redo the whole thing-it would actually take just as long as it would to paint the thin lines and clean up the inevitable mess it will make.
