I have a rental house. 1920’s with old galv supply pipes. There is a clawfoot tub with a faucet that is about 7 years old. Recently the tenants complain that when the taps are turned to a certain point they get a chattering , hammering screeching sound and the water pressure drops. From doing some searching in here it looks like there is something in the valve that is flopping around. So if I go and take the faucet apart will it be obvious what is causing the problem and if not what part should I try to replace to fix it. Do I need to buy a hammer arrester or should I be able to fix the problem with out it. Thanks for any insight. Brian

Replacing the washers & stem seals in the valves usually fixes this. I have had valves where the stem threads were so worn that it didn't help. In that case, a new valve is in order.
