Strange question but here goes. Any recons for cheap! lumber in the SE MA area, Cape Cod or South Shore. Looking to use real cheap pine or otherwise, for making a shipping crate that is about 7x4x4 for an Xmas gift. It gets pretty expensive when you look at the overall cost. Or maybe suggestion on a place that might have such an animal out at the dumpster! Thanks for the help as always!

Look for a place that recycles pallets. They typically pay $1-5/ea for them, so I imagine you could buy one from them for a bit more.

Jet Ski. Am I right?
Outstanding Idea!! Cheers.
If you have a sawmill in the area they may sell you a load of utility grade rough sawn.
I buy a bed of a truck full of rough sawn for 35$. Makes great saw horses.

We're only two guys building a fancy guest house, but after reusing about 100 2x6x10s for various concrete related bracing projects we're ready to chuck 'em as soon as the dumpster empties a bit because they don't look good enough for framing.
Each project I've been on has a stage where a couple dozen substandard boards are chucked.

You might ask at HD or Lowe's if they ever get around to dumpstering the picked-over forklift-damaged wood that nobody ever buys? At least here, somehow it goes away after a few weeks.

Find a motorcycle dealer or lawn tractor retailer, they toss the crates THEY came in. I used to get really sweet mahogany from a Yamaha dealer, seems in Japan, that is thier utility wood.

I used to work at Amana Refrig. I unloaded the compressors off the palets for the assembly people to install. Pallets/compressors came from South Am. and the 4' 2 X 4's on the botton often times were rosewood and other nice S. Am hardwoods.
I must have 150 4' pieces of nice assorted woods. All I had to do was get a piece of paper from my foreman and show it to the gaurd on the way out. A lot of good wood going to waste out there.

Yup, my hardwood yard in NC gave me all the cribbing that the lifts of ply came chocked with. I have a load of 4' 4x4's and such of Avoidire and mahog, Ipe, some dalbergia ( rosewoods) and some things that I can't even ID...
I typically square them up and have a few hunks around the shop for odds and ends, or the occaional set of table legs.
They'd fill the dumpster about every two weeks, some times I'd time it right and bring home more than I actually went ge. Tell the wife, I'll just get 100' of Walnut and 10 sheets of BBirch...come home with the van sagging...LOL
