we are getting ready to reroof our virginia home with 30 yr certain teed regular shingle, and could sure use some good advice. the different roofers we talk with have various opinions about the chimmney flashing, which will be aluminum. some say dont bother with putting the flashing into the brickwork (reglet style) other says he will cut the brickwork mortar and let in the new flashing after cleaning off the old caulk and flashing, which has been in place about 30 years. I haven’t seen much difference in price, which isn’t the most important point anyway. Does anyone have experience with this? Would silicone caulking be needed or desired, on topk of the flashing, even if it is let into the brickwork mortar seams- sort of suspenders with a belt idea? Thanks for your attention, I really like the free discussions and knowhow on this site.

Could you please use a larger font? Thanks
if you are really a "coastie" then you are in the salt-spray zone
in that case i wouldn't allow aluminum flashing on my chimney... i'd be using either copper, zinc-coat copper, or lead
and it would be let-in and repointed with either mortar or one of the epoxy cement caulks
You do not want siliocone there. The acid in it is detrimental to both masonry and AL
bit I would not use AL flashing.
Lead or copper is what you should be getting.
and yes, let into the joint
