Hello all,
I am going to have a chimney relined with stainless steel and I have been offered a choice between single and double lined. The various installers have given me their respective pitches and I’m wondering if any of you all have an opinion on this.
Thanks, M

My only experience in re-lining a chimney was when we installed a woodstove insert into an existing fireplace. The original chimney is a concrete block/clay liner affair that has no structural issues. The installers ran a flexible stainless liner sized for the new woodstove. All is well.
It seems to me that if your existing chimney has been compromised for fire containment then you have to compensate for that fact. That means a double walled liner. If the existing chimney is OK and you are simply resizing, as I did, then a single wall is adequate.
relining
The answer depends on what you atre burning. what condition and specs of your currenbt chimney, andwhy you are doing this. That means a world of variables to state before I have an opinion.
Waht cost
What is the price of your bids. I have a similar need and am curious what it might cost to have it relined. Thanks.
That can run anywhere from five hundred to two grand or so
What dictates the range in cost? Seems pretty straight forward. Perhaps steepness of teh roof, but most guys who run roofs don't seem to think too much about that after a while on the job. Perhaps length of the flue. tha would have a small impact on the material costs, and one would not think a big deal in pulling a few extra foot of pipe. Hmm?
Some chimneys are three times as tall as others. A typical one story with 4/12 rof may only neeed 14'. I just inspected one a couple weeks ago that had a 36' chimney and that was not a terribly large house or steep roof. A 6/12 IIRC.
There are differences in gauge of stainless steel, as well as the diff between flex and solid.
There are also linings that involve a grout poured around the liner, bwetween it and the existing flue.
Then there is the type of cap involved, and whether there is a need to do any repairs to the existing too.
Back to variabkes for the OP - a gas appliance might be getting relined with PVC. There are dozens of variables....
