I just finished these wooden planes, done per a how-to article in a recent “Popular Mechanics.”
Bodies are cherry, soles are wenge with some rosewood mixed in, and wedges are wenge and hard maple.
Each plane (a 7″ block, 10-1/2″ smoother, and 17″ jointer) fits snug in a hinged-top box with latch. The box tops are studded with brass escutcheon pins.
Irons and caps are from Hock Tools, and I honed each with a mirror edge that can slice hairs off the backs of my hands.
Since the box tops and bottoms were just glued on, I wanted to ensure some longevity and so used the brass 3/4″ pins. They looked nice, so I added a lot of them. I’m liking the studded look. Makes me think of a book I read that included passages about hillbilly snake handlers, that kept their rattlers in boxes studded with nails in strange patterns. Also Melville’s “Moby Dick,” in which the whaling ship Peqoud had all its railings studded with whales’ teeth. Cool.
The planes are for friends and relatives, who I know will use them.
