Hi folks,
The city workers here in Vancouver just went on strike, which includes the building inspectors. Anyone know what is usually done about inspections during a strike? I have a porch that I need to rebuild (my house), but I’m supposed to get a field review of the existing before starting work. Plus a few walls that need inspection before I can close them in. I can’t imagine all construction work stopping in the city now.
Thanks, Todd

Unfortunately, that's why strikes are effective.
They might just use the managers.
They might hire retired inspectors.
They might relax some inspection requirements.
They might allow some self-inspections or inspectors from neighboring areas.
They hire retired tradsman that might not know the actual code requires.
They might restrict new projects, but allow exiting to continue.
They might do nothing.
In an case I am sure that things will be somewhat slow to complete stopage.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Hi Todd
I don't think construction work is going to stop, but whatever needs to get inspected is probably not going to happen. Call city hall on Monday morning and ask them what how to proceed.
Btw who picks up your garbage? Out here in Coquitlam it's Waste Management.
Good luck with the inspection

Hi guys,It's not clear to me yet whether the 'inside' workers, which includes the inspectors (I think?) will be striking tomorrow. Maybe I'll get lucky yet! I'll be trying to get through to city hall tomorrow to see what they say. MHR, I'm in Vancouver, so it's the city that picks up our garbage. I'm pretty close to the North Shore Transfer station, so I can drop off there, if they aren't involved in the strike, too. And if the line-ups aren't too bad! This whole job is getting kind of ridiculous. I went in to make some changes to the porch and the roof over it, and found out that it's non-conforming (too close to the property line). I can repair it in place, but can't change anything. So I'm ending up getting a permit to replace a few sheet of plywood and a railing. Damn it.
"too close to the property line"That sounds like one of them 33 feet Van City lots...(when your next door neighbor farts, you can hear it LOL)Martin
The city just announced their plans for services during the strike.
