If a client expresses an interest in “classic mediterranean architecture,” what images first come to mind? What elements are included in that? Of course I’ll ask them what it means to them, but I’m wondering what it means to others…

stone, parged surfaces, tile roofs, ironwork, - little wood, but what there is, is heavy and rough, - multi-pane double door/windows opening onto small balconies, heavy blind entrance doors - light colors -
topless beaches...
That would fit my picture of "mediteranean"

I take 'classic' to mean 'Italian' for the most part -
lots of different stuff going on around that sea -
but you are definitely right, he better get the clients to expand on their vision -
"there's enough for everyone"
There are whole books written on Classical Architecture. It is a lot of what I do ( well, Classical Revival and Neo-Classical) It models on the old Hellenic Greek and Roman temple architecture, and the works of Vitruvious(sp?) and Palladio.

we had a client who had a similar desire once . . . turned out mostly what she meant was arched openings
i would express my own thoughts . . . but for some reason all i can think of now are topless beaches
Adding to David's list; some, not all, arched doorways and windows. Covered patios with arched openings. Tile floors in many rooms and outdoor spaces. Hand painted tiles for counter tops. Fountain as a centerpiece in the front yard. Dark wood, often rough. Exposed timber trusses.
o.k., that's over
White, thick, small windows, flat rooftops. Maybe some ceramic tile and mosaics.
Blinding white stucco, blue trim, hillside, central courtyard, goat bells in the distance, the smell of roasting lamb, and clothing-optional beaches.

darn it . . . now i'm thinking of naked people and sheep
that's not good
uh oh! Just to get your libido back down, the smaller, more picturesque Mediterranean villages also tend to be redolent of flowers and excrement in just about equal proportions.

Not a chance in hell! The day any hang out here (that I know) is the day I stop. This is my "Cheers"--a place separate from family and clients. I need one of those, and y'all are (stuck with) it!
Hang away! Me too.

Baaaaaad idea!

I would definitely be asking them. To me, "classical architecture" means one thing, and "Mediterranean architecture" means yet another.

What comes to mind is that it is appropriate to the Mediterranean. Certain features like shaded terraces might make sense in some of the warmer areas of the US, but I don't think it is a good idea to transfer regional architectural styles that evolved in a particular culture to somewhere else. One guy does Spanish, his neighbour French Chateau, throw in a nearby Ranch and then where are we?
"One guy does Spanish, his neighbour French Chateau, throw in a nearby Ranch and then where are we?"LOL! -- you're in Grand Junction, CO. Out here faux Tuscan villa seems to be the preferred style for upscale homes these days. But don't look too closely or you'll see that styrofoam and fake stucco make up most of the exteriors, and stained concrete "marble" graces the interiors and patios. But hey, what do you expect for $300 a SF?
It's too bad. Even though our Countries are relatively young, there are so many interesting regional styles to use as the starting points for designs. Pretty well everywhere has something. The SW Adobe, Post and Beam in the PNW, Cannery in the Maritimes, Shotgun houses in the South. Anything that speaks to the climate and history of the place.
If you were kidnapped and released in Victoria, the closest city to where I live, you wouldn't have any clue to where you were unless you could see the harbour. Downtown is all Starbucks and The Gap. Out in the burbs it's all big box stores and Hardiplank.
A lot of Whistler Village is stucco on foam. Skiers love to poke their poles through it.
Stucco exterior, clay tile roof. balconies with large overhangs to shade from the sun.
For some reason, a Venetian plaster dome popped into my head.
Check out a Spartacus restaurant<G> Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess.
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy,
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me.
I can't help it if I'm lucky.
