Will be attaching a porch floor ledger to a clay tile block foundation (those hollow red clay things no longer used, but available some 60-70 years ago) on a perimeter wall. The original was nailed to long studs (balloon framed) dropped into the first 8″ of foundation blocks at the house end, and attached to “floating” studs at the perimeter; later someone added molly bolts (toggle bolts) to the floating studs (no sign of what they originally were secured too–I suspect they floated on the dirt).
Anyone have experience with these foundations, attaching things to them? Couldn’t find anything in an archive search. I’ll be lag bolting the house side to the long studs, but the perimeter is making me scratch my head. I thought of again using molly bolts, but am having trouble finding HD galvanized or stainless (ACQ, ya’ know); I’m also concerned that the block wall (only 1/2-3/4″ thick) would break under the weight. I’ve also thought of trying to set anchors into cement, but can’t figure out how to get it (cement) into the cavity.
While I’ve got your attention, anyone have thoughts on primer painting galvanized joist hangers to use against ACQ? Will the primer provide a long term barrier to corrosion?
Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
Dan

Yeah, you see those walls all the time in old buldings of that era. Mostly in hospitals and schools where there is remodelling and demo work going on. Just be careful because they are very brittle and will crack on you.
