I have about 1500 18th century brick that have soot on them. I want to clean them so that I can use them as face brick. They are soft relative to new brick, so I don’t want to pressure wash them. Anyone have experience with this situation? What do you suggest?
Thanks

Will they be inside?
Re-fire them. If you get them hot enough, it'll burn right off, just like it does in the hot spots in a fireplace.
What about blasting it? I know you already said pressure washing was out due to the softness, but the pressure is at 2000-2500 psi. what about using walnut shells or other less abrasive medium at a lower presure. Say 75 psi or just enough to syphon the abrasive?
Just a thought. Not based on anything else.
Thanks for your input. It's an interesting idea. I have removed most of the soot but not all of the soot stain by scrubbing with trisodium phosphate and a stiff brush.
