What would be the best clear finish for a new Douglas Fir exterior door. The door faces west, is under a 1 foot overhang, and has a storm door. I like the look of spar varnish but I do not want to be a slave to the door.
Thanks

Hi Carl
Finishing is about familiarity with product. When we find a product that works for us,we tend to stick with it. Such is the case with Exterior Tung Oil Finish by Behr. In use in Northwestern Ontario(-40F to + 80F) on exterior oak and cedar doors with south, north and east exposures without storm doors. It is an oil finish and all oil finishes need to be replenished on a yearly or biyearly basis. The good news is that it never scales or flakes like spar varnish. We recoat once yearly-works for us- the doors are beautful! Behr's tollfree # 800-661-1591;ask Claude any questions you have including other products you're thinking of using.
Finishing is a process- everyone has their own inclination, motivation and style. A cool book on finishing is Adventures in Finishing by Frank Klaus.

As long as the local AQMD is not patrolling, I would shoot it with automobile laquer, about 3-5 coats. Fast drying, tough as nails, but environmentally unfriendly.

Boris
