I’m putting my toilet back down after some work in the bathroom.
I laid down 1/2 plywood over the plank sub-floor. The flooring is vinyl. The brass closet flange wasn’t going to move up, so I left on the old subfloor making it now below the level of the finished floor (about 1/4 inch)
I did an advanced search here and came to the conclusion that an extra tall wax ring should be fine. However when I got to the hardware store at lunch, the pluming guy told me that even with the tall ring (which I bought) the flange needed to at least be even with the floor and that I was going to have to put an extension on the flange (which I also bought).
Now I can’t see how I am going to get this extension ring to seal properly to the existing flange. Am I better off just to try the tall gasket (which says on the box it can be used if the flange is below the finish height)?

I have used a wax ring with a plastic horn on top of a regular wax ring. They also sell reuseable rubber "wax ring" that is supposed to be good for a considerable gap. Can't think of the name.

The extension ring does not have to have watertight seal.It just raises the rim to the correct height. Then use a wax seal with the rubber boot,
