hello-
i am new the site, although I have read many of the magazines for quite a while. my husband and i just bought a 2 story 60s colonial and will be doing a fairly major exterior face lift and remodel (interior too.) we have remodeled a 50s ranch house in another city and now have a new challenge, most of the work we have done is interior. we are going to replace windows and siding to a more simple cottage look with shake and divided lite windows, new porch/gable roof entry. what i am struggling with is the roof line. it is a lower roof, i am guessing 4:12 and dates the outside, i feel no matter what we do with the siding/windows. any ideas? i don’t wan to have to pull the roof off and change the roof lline, just wondering if there is something i am missing…i am attaching a photo to look at.
and a good general question, there are tons of colonials out there!
thanks.

Your house is very typical of the 1960's colonial style. Not only is the roof line shallow, the eaves are very deep. I doubt you will be able to change this without a major expense. Also given the massing of the body of the house, it will still most likely scream 1960's. Have you considered consulting with an Architect that specializes in remodelling? They may have ideas.
Another thought is why try to hide the 1960's look? It is only a matter of time that it will be very cool to have a 60's home. 10 years ago no one wanted a 50's home and now they are becoming desirable and are called "Mid-Century Modern". Good luck Jay
