Walk-out basement with rec room, bedrooms and bath. I was going to tile it but some of the concrete work being done now looks great. Any thoughts on which is more cost effective for a DIY’er.

Stained concrete? You still need control joints though...
Maybe check out http://www.acidstain.com for some pics

Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
Can't remember his name, but there is a guy in Trinidad who has a concrete pump and also does concrete staining. He only pumped concrete for me, but said he had a bunch of references on the staining work. You could probably ask an area ready mix plant and they'd know who since he pumps. Or ask Scott at T'dad Builder Supply, he might know.
There's also a guy in La Veta named Scott Davis who does stone work of all types, including floors. He learn through an apprenticeship in Austria. Does scratch built masonry wood stoves, too. Good work and a top notch guy to deal with, if you are interested in something along that line.

some people around my area will say exterior tile over concrete is a good idea ... but I'll tell ya it'll pop due to freeze/thaw conditions.
around here ... cost effective would be the one that actually stays put!
