I have a client that has a tile floor with a step. The floor is concrete with a 2X6 riser, I think an old form board left in place. The tile has cracked twice already from a poor bond to the wood. I was thinking of trying to remove the 2X6 and pour a little cement in the place of the 2X6 to keep the same tile layout. What type of cement should I use and should I dowel it? Any other tips would be appreciated.

Maybe you could use thinset to replace the wood with a few layers of cement backer board. This would be more stable than the wood.
On the other hand, why are the tiles cracking? Is pressure placed on them when someone steps on the tread?
