Conduit for under-cabinet wiring?
I have been building replacement cabinets for my kitchen since last fall. Today was installation day for the last section of base cabinets, a 6 foot long section between the wall and dishwasher. When I pulled out the old cabinets, I found the wiring, which provides the power to the DW and a plug receptactle at the far end of the cabinets, just lying on the bare concrete slab; about 1 foot of flex conduit encloses the wire that goes to the DW just before it contacts the DW . Both wires seem to be in OK shape, insulation still intact. (Actually one of the wires had been pinched beneath the cabinet base, but with the shoddy construction of these site-built cabinets of 23 years ago, I wasn’t surprised.)
My question is, is it common practise, (or required by Code) to place under cabinet wiring in conduit? I usually hang around over on the Knots site, but need the expert advice I get from this site occassionally. Your advice is always appreciated, Thanks, Gary

The wire needs to be protected.
If you can trace it back to a accessable junction box, start there, and repalce it with the appropriate MC cable. MC cable is prewired flexible metal. You can route it beneath or through the base units as needed.
