Ultimately depends on just how complete the specs and contract are though.
It all depends on the project for me. If it is a well scoped and straightforward effort, I put in about 3-5%. If it is vague or super challenging I make sure I up all my direct costs (Labor and materials) and then add 10-20%. If it is still vague, you need to word your scope of work so that your exposure is limited and start the change orders.

roughly 5-10% but it's also an experience thing. the bigger issue os in the contract & how you cover such issues to make them a change order item.
