I mostly do fine woodworking, i.e. custom furniture, antique restoration and minor finish carpentry. Occasionally I get the larger built in project, such as kitchen cabinets or the like.
I’ve been running a business for about 5 years (I am the only employee) and never bothered with a contractors license. This is Rhode Island after all. But as my business has grown, and since I’m bidding a kitchen job for a Boston client I think it might be time to finally get one.
My questions to those knowledgeable about such matters are:
1. What type of work requires a contractors license?
2. Is a contractors license required for jobs over a certain monetary size?
3. If I am a RI based woodworker/contractor, do I need a license to do work in MA?
4. Does anyone know of a good insurance company to get my liability coverage? How much should I expcet to pay for this coverage?
Thanks in advance fo any advice!

you have to REGISTER in RI.. there is no license.. it is a Contractor's Registration Law
and they've increased the penalties for failure to register
you definitely have to get licensed in Mass if you are going to work in Mass..
they have different licenses for different scope
the primary license is "Construction Supervisor".. but there are restricted licenses also... Mass License is by test...
GL should run you slightly less than $500 depending ..
a couple of agencies are "Contractors Insurance Services"
or " Mastors & Servant".. or your home town agency
