Controls for HW heating package
I have been over on The Wall with this, and thought I would ask it here, too.
New construction, we’re tight with funds, because the buyers simply won’t pay for the value of higher end packages. LP fired hot water heating, we’re likely going to use a Munchkin T80 or Contender 80 mod-con boiler.
Lower walkout level, with a foundation surround all of ICF, except for the walkout elevation which is wood framed, will be RFH in the slab. Three rooms, two zones.
Main level above, all wood framed, will be heated with Myson steel panel radiators, each equipped with a TRV.
How would you set up control for the whole shebang? BTW, our winter design temp is -25F.

Floor heat would be controlled by zone valves and a multi-zone control panel, run the circulation pump when the heat is "on", the TRV's are all the controls the upstairs needs. Put a pressure regulator on the return to protect the pump and "let 'er dance". Outside air temperature has little to do with comfort controls (with the obvious exception of outdoor temperature reset control for the boiler supply temperature, not applicable for a "cheapie"), but a lot to do with equipment capcity and system design/layout. Personally, for a budget system; no zones in the floor, one pump, one manual mixing valve, one PRV for the protection of the pump. Set the boiler at 180, set the mixing valve at 120 and move on to the next.
OTH, for real cheap customers, give 'em a Goodman gas furnace and a pile of flex! ;>

Sounds like you hang out at H-talk. LOL
"Sounds like you hang out at H-talk"
Naw, I'm not a high school educated, union tech with a big chip on my shoulder, so I don't fit in there very well.
How did you know I've got a chip on my shoulder?
I don't know about you, Rich. I was referring to what was my impression of a lot of the posters visiting the HVAC Talk forum.
Actually, I think you would probably enjoy the pro only forums. Lots of good info.
H-talk was never intended to be a DIY site. Hard to argue with the no pricing rule, when costs can vary so much from one area to another.
It has been some time since I visited that site, so I should give a fair change before being so critical and negative. I have spent, in the past when I had more "break" time available, a lot of time on the Wall, and HVAC Talk and have learned a great deal at both places as well as on BT. I don't recall what soured me to HTalk. Seemed to be a lot of bickering, union vs. non, and the like.
Priceless....
