My neighborhood is converting from propane to natural gas. Good news, I think. At least I cna get rid of the ugly propane tank.
I have been quoted about $100 to convert my furnace and about $200 for the direct vent water heater. For some reason a normal water heater is only $100. Not sure why the difference since it appears to be a normal one with just a noisy fan on the flue. Anyway, I’ll likely leave this to the pros. I also have an inexpensive gas grill outside. My question is, can I just drill out the orifices on the burner bar? If so, can anyone tell me the drill size to use? Thanks a lot.

Converting a grill is a bad idea. When you put the valve on minimum, there is a bypass port inside the valve that lets the proper amount of lp through. That bypass may be to small to sustain a flame with ng.
Your grill may not be rated for ng. If there is an inspection, it may not pass.
If you do convert, get the proper valves.
NG grills are getting real cheap.

OK, maybe I'll stop being so cheap and look at a new grill.
Take a look at the NG cost thread.
Do you intend to retire in the house you are in now?
If so, It may be time to consider switching to a heat pump or even GSHP (ground source). NG prices will likely go up faster than electricity.
See many other threads on comparative pricing.
My cabin (weekends only, not a full time residence) is at 10,000 feet on the continental divide and we still have some snow on the ground today, so it is definitely a cold place. I have heard heat pumps don't work there, but I am not an expert.
