I built a deck yesterday and looked at the stamps on the ends of the boards. They all said Copper Azole, not one thing abour acq. Is this a new treated lumber?
I haven’t heard of it before, I tried to get a hold of my saleman to see what it was.
Any of you care to share any thoughts of experiences with it. Or is it a brand name of the same acq lumber we have grown to hate.
Matt

I see thats it's just another name for acq, same fastener issues. Still treated with copper.
THanks for the links Piffin.

Where did you see that?
CA-B is Copper Azole type B, according to the EPA link, which Piffin provided (way back when this thread was on topic).
CA-B is not the same treatment chemistry as ACQ.
ACQ stands for Alkaline Copper Quaternary.
>>>Still treated with copper. <<<<
So was the old CCA (Chrominated Copper Arsenate).
I don't think you can jump to any conclusions here without further research. I would start with the manufacturer / treater of the wood which you have. Then the AWPA for further insight.
A 3+ year old FHB article suggests that CA-B and ACQ have more or less equal corrosion issues. So I guess the bottom line is, if you treated it like it was ACQ in terms of hangers and fasteners, you should be OK.

The reason I say say it's just another name for acq is because of the corrosion issues. The chemistry might be different but the results are the same.

Yeah, in other words, it is still not a kinder, gentler PT yet;)

That is what I was hoping for, I saw copper in the name and still had my doubts. Same problems with electrolysis basically.
I'm glad that I planned on it being acq, I still had the right hardware delivered with the lumber.

Check out this website - http://www.ufpi.com
"ProWood Micro" - SYP treated with "miconized" copper quat, .25 pcf for above ground use, .40 pcf for ground contact or fresh water immersion. Same warranty periods as ACQ.
The only dealers in my area are (gulp) Home Depot's big orange boxes.
The physical appearance of the wood is much lighter in color and considerably dryer (lighter in wieght) than ACQ. Does not leave wet rings if hit with a hammer.
Manufacturer claims a corrosion rate for bright steel as falling between that of untreated KD and the old CCA. Far less than ACQ rates.
The product was interesting enough to me that I have started my own backyard corrosion test. This test is only 2 weeks old, so there are no results to speak of at the moment - all brights are showing surface rust from dew and 2 brief periods of light rain.
2 panels prepared with "bought same day", KD, ProWood and ACQ. 10 different fastener types (3 samples each) driven into all three wood samples. Fasteners run the gammet from bright common nails through a range of HDG, several coated screws, GRK's and on to SS deck screws. Mill finish aluminum flashing is in contact with all treated samples.
Both test panels were left exposed to the weather for 1 week; after 1 week, one test panel was moved into my basement (simulating sill plate use); other panel is still exposed to the weather (simulating exterior use).

You should do some time lapse photos of you test.
Hey! Who you callin an azole? I 'll call the coppers..
Trivia time..cops are called cops from back when thier uniforms had copper buttons..hence the " look here Copper, I didn't rob da joint"..

Careful, we'll hav'ta 'splain why they are called Bobbies and ride in black Marias next <secret wink;nudge, nudge>
Or why it's "droppin' a dime" even though pay phones are going the way of rotary dial phones . . .
Or why there are two different verb meanings for "cop" . . .
Back on topic, is the CA as awful to get on your skin as the acq?

CA Vs.ACQ ?
I don't know, I steer clear of it...I'll use whatever else I can to avoid the hassles. Warpy, twisty , wet , soon to be pretzel wood is for others to play with.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

LoL! What I've seen of either, I've just assumed was only for the tract builder or fine-art "masterpiece" market . . .
Had to go look up, for principal the father, recommended specifications for fasteners in treated lumber (he's conveniently retired whenever I have to go do the work <grrr>).Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
