Does $50/LF sound about right for copper gutters, installed with downspouts and accessories, on an “average” house?
$30/LF for wood or Azek gutters, installed?

FWIW I just spent $1220 for 20 oz 2 20' lengths 1/2 round Copper gutters and 2 10' downsputs (also 20 oz) and 26 #30 shanks and circle brackets, 6 elbows, miscellaneous fittings. This is just for material.
I'm installing on a shed (yes I'm crazy) 16' long. $1220/32 = $38.12 material only.
Can you install it for $385? 'Cause that would make it $50/ft, I think.
I just had a half round copper with one down 10' installed for aprox $35/ft L&M a couple months ago

Thanks--
$35 to $40, good enough for initial estimate....
How are things going up there?
Maybe a tad high, but it depends on a lot of variables. Site, corners( miters) and number of drops.

Key word "average." This is just for initial take-offs. I would ask our copper guy but he's neck deep welding a SS sink to a counter right for us right now.
I agree with Grant, it's still high.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

We'll go with $40 then--thanks!
Sounds about $10/ft too high if there's a lot of miters. About $15/ft too high if there's not. And I'm talking about 6" HR. 5" is considerably cheaper.

News flash.
Gas in Estill Co. hit 5.85! Yes, thatsa five. I was just out with the 350 and filled @ 3.85..the line was a 1/2 hour wait.

I haven't noticed. It was $3.75 this AM, but I saw in the news that west of here it went to $4.65 from $3.45 over night.View Image
I just ran down to the Speedway. It's still $3.85. I pulled right up to the pump, but by the time I got filled, the line was out into the street. It must be up across town already.View Image
Every station from here to 75 ( all 4 of them) was backed up onto the bypass and service roads, man, news must travel REAL fast.
My main stop at 52 and 374 Shell said he's expecting ANOTHER dollar jump tonite from what he hears..FWIW.
Ain't life grand, my trans is going in the van, I figured I'd drive the 350 till I decide what to do...that 7mpg is gonna hurt. And no I ain't camping at McK's..LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I heard they were shutting down the refineries in the Gulf and that would drive prices up, but a whole dollar! Yikes
Poor gas companies are probably barely treading water at these prices.
I sent that bit out yesterday, I know that I said that I would do it Wed but I lied. You should have it by Mon or Tues.

10-4.
I just saw the local news, they are "blaming" it on IKE, and the refinery shut down.
I think it's more of a panic and word of mouth panic making more panic and some stations have run out. Making , you guessed it, more panic. So with that, some stations are getting jerky and jacking up the $.

I'm getting 13-14 MPG on my '85 350 GMC van lately. Love that synthetic.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Same here in that van, now I have Air Cond it drops 1 mpg, add a ladder or two and subtract another 1 or two. I have to do 80 mph to keep with the herd for about 18-20 miles, the other 20 miles of my daily drive is semi-normal. 10 miles on twisty back roads, the other 10 at 55 mph bypass type stop at the light and mash it to the next light.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Thanks Grant. We usually do K-style or similar, rarely half-round. Does that make much difference?
We usually do K-style or similar, rarely half-round. Does that make much difference?
Depending on the hangers, HR is usually a little to a lot higher than K and size makes a big difference as well. For straight runs of 16 oz 5" K, I'm charging about $20/ft installed. 6" K is about $30/ft. I get beat at those prices by the guys running copper thru gutter machines, but my end product is superior.
3" downspout is $18/ft and 4" is $22/ft. View Image
Grant,
Do you buy 10' K style and solder everything up or can you get longer pieces?

I can get 5" and 6" K in 25' lengths. Any other size is 10' only.

Wasn't there talk of Corkin getting a gutter machine and site forming? Back the spring before last?

Do you bend gutter with little facets, or do you have some sort of die to bend against? I don't even know how that would work. Is the extruded stuff softer copper, or a lighter gauge?
Do you bend gutter with little facets, or do you have some sort of die to bend against?
I have roll attachments to do radius and ogee bends, but I typically buy K gutter that's formed on some sort of 25' CNC brake from hard copper.
Is the extruded stuff softer copper, or a lighter gauge?
It's softer and dings much easier. View Image
Notr sure, but I know for me, I can install a copper gutter for a lot less labour than a wood or azec. Haven't checked lately, but I think prices for materials about the same.
But it is hard to compare apples to oranges, because the wood gutter is an integral part of the house and fascia trim package, while the copper in an add-on generally, after the fascia is all painted.

Mike Maines.
I did it myself and went really overboard on the ornate optional stuff. Look at photos of my place to see the degree.
I put angel winged brass gutter hangers under the gutter every 2 feet, and fancy brass ivy on the down spouts etc.. This stuff is sturdy as heck. I can hang from it and do chin ups and I weigh 280 pounds!
My cost was $2.39 a foot. Now it's really not that expensive because That includes brass "cannon's" for discharge at the down spouts and also in my wall. That's a total of 7 @ $195.00 each.
In fact if you were reasonable and didn't get carried away with the ornate stuff you could probaly do it for around 1/2 of what I spent..
It's really easy to do.. Don't do it off a ladder...... too scary.. IF you don't have access to the equipment I did you should rent scaffolding for nice safe walking and ease of installation.. I could do my whole 5500 sq.ft. house in a day and believe it or not it's a one man job..
I used Classic Gutter's stuff (they have advertizements right here in in Fine home building) but I found cheaper prices locally. The local places didn't have the ornate stuff I liked..
You're rambling on about several year old material prices.
Mike's question was for bidding purposes to hire a contractor to do a certain type of work, if I understood correctly.
Oh yeah - I built my own telehandler for $65.00 - blah blah blah. It wouldn't have cost that much, but I wanted raised white letter tires on it.View Image
seeyou,
I have yet to get my most recent order.. Those gutters were ordered as I finished each section. Some parts were ordered early this spring and some just ordered last week.
True some date from as much as three/ four years ago but I'm sure I could have saved some shipping costs by ordering everything at once.
MY point is that the parts aren't terribly expensive and if fat old me can hang gutter it's not exactly rocket science.. Nor is it scary if you do it yourself. My gutters are all 20 feet plus from the ground.
Thanks Frenchy, but CU's right, I just needed a quick ballpark price for estimating purposes. We do design-build contracting but I haven't priced copper gutters in a while and needed to for an initial estimate for an upcoming project. If they sign a construction contract I'll talk to the subs for actual pricing, but I don't like to bother them at this stage unless I'm really clueless about something (which happens often enough). The price of copper has gone up so much lately that I really wasn't sure what a fair ballpark would be.
If I could afford copper on my own house I would do it. In fact there's one length of 1/2 round from Classic Gutters sitting in our shop for a job that didn't happen. I think we paid around $900 for a 24 ft section, but that was two or three years ago.
Mike,
I just checked. My Nov. 15 2005 price for 40 feet of 6 inch gutter was $238. (that's my oldest prices). They did charge me $20.00 for a gutter box but when it arrived there were some dents in the back side of the gutter from stacking it in the truck wrong. My newest prices from this spring was 21 feet of 6 inch copper gutter was $183.75. That means gutter is up $2.80 a foot. over three years ago..
I complained to the trucking company and they came out and replaced all of the gutter and asked me to dispose of the old stuff. I did! <grin>
The currant prices are on their web site..
But seeyou is correct.. I only look at costs from a material cost stand point not from paying a contractor to come out and do the work for me..
I can hang from it and do chin ups and I weigh 280 pounds!
Bet you cant do two chin ups from it!
Doug

Depends on how late in the day it is.. <grin> Oh the gutter will easily handle it, It's just that old fat men can't always do what they did in their youth..
